The National Flag of India was adopted in its present form on 15 August 1947 during an ad hoc meeting of the Constituent Assembly held on 22 July 1947, a few days before India's independence from the British. It has served as the national flag of the Dominion. of India between 15 August 1947 and 26 January 1950 and the Republic of India thereafter. In India, the term "tricolor" [tiranga - tricolor] almost always refers to the Indian national flag.
The flag is a horizontal tricolor of saffron at the top, white in the middle, and green at the bottom. In the center, there is a dark blue wheel with twenty-four spokes, known as the Ashoka Chakra, taken from the Ashoka Pillar at Sarnath. The diameter of this circle is three fourth of the height of the white strip. The ratio of the height and width of the flag is 2:3. The flag is also the war flag of the Indian Army, which is flown daily at military installations.
The Indian national flag was designed by Pingali Venkayya. Official flag specifications require that the flag be made only of "khadi", a special type of hand-spun thread. The display and use of the flag are strictly enforced by the Flag Code of India.
